It ain’t easy being green, but a change is gonna come.
What the future will look like we don’t know, but we sure can make predictions. The water levels are rising which isn’t very prosperous for The Netherlands since most of the country lies beneath the water level. Will it be flooded this would mean local migration would take place from the west to the east of the country resulting in cultural changes, logistical changes, a change in geological wealth distribution, and so forth.
To stay ahead of scenarios like these it’s well known that plans have been made to take care of our climate, worldwide. This means shifting our current energy resources to sustainable ones like solar and wind energy by placing solar panels and windmills. But how would our surroundings look like making use of these technologies? Perhaps something like this.

For this shot we first created the following 3D assets which were to be integrated into the live action footage.

Motion Tracking
We also needed to reconstruct the initial camera movement for the assets to be composited into the shot realistically. By creating a point cloud from the tracked background plate and importing the point cloud back into the DCC we were able to put the 3D elements in place.

Rendering
Afterwards we rendered out the digital elements – taking the lighting into account – to composite everything on top of the background plate. A shadow catcher was used to catch the shadows which makes sure the elements feel grounded and integrated in the plate for a more believable and realistic image. Additionally motion blur was applied inside the render engine.

Compositing
To finalize the shot we took care of color correction and motion tracked the truck and the environment to add the necessary 2D components to complete the overall image and we provided proper grading to add to the visual style we were looking for.
